Providence Heat Pump Installation Cost 2026: What You'll Actually Pay

Search "heat pump installation cost" and you will find national averages that are useless in Providence. National numbers blend Phoenix condos with Minnesota farmhouses, and none of them account for the single most important fact about buying a heat pump in Rhode Island: the state pays 60 percent of the bill, up to $11,500, through Clean Heat RI. Income-eligible households pay nothing up to $18,000.

So this guide gives you two numbers for every scenario: the gross installed cost, which is what the contractor's quote says, and the net cost, which is what actually leaves your bank account. The net number is the only one that matters, and in Providence it is routinely less than half of gross.

The triple-decker floor. One flat, typically 1,000 to 1,300 square feet. A three-head ductless system usually covers it: living space, two bedrooms. Gross around $11,000 to $14,000; net after the 60 percent rebate, roughly $4,400 to $5,600. Many triple-decker owners do one floor per year, and owner-occupants of multi-family buildings should ask about program treatment of multiple units.

The East Side Victorian. Large, beautiful, leaky. Expect a load calculation to come back high, and expect the right answer to be either a two-system design or a load-reduction conversation first: air sealing and attic insulation before equipment. Reducing the load first can pull the project from above the rebate cap to under it, which is a double win. Gross $20,000 to $32,000 depending on scope.

The Cranston or Warwick ranch. The easiest conversion in the region, especially with existing ductwork. Single ducted system, straightforward outdoor placement. Gross $13,000 to $17,000; net commonly under $6,000.

The Pawtucket two-family. Similar economics to the triple-decker, doubled. Per-unit ductless systems keep tenants' zones independent, which most landlords prefer.

What Should Be In Every Quote
